Harold Artinus Shutt
United States Navy Chief gunners mate Harold Artinus Shutt was born on April 22nd 1903 in Ohio.
Harold enlisted as a Private in the Army on February 2nd 1921, just months before his 18th birthday. Private Shutt served for the next 3 years until he was discharged on February 1st 1924.
Harold enlisted in the Navy as an Apprentice Seaman November 29th 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. He received training at Navy Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois. Seaman Shutt was transferred to the Destroyer U.S.S. Litchfield on March 30th 1928. He quickly rose through the ranks to Gunner Mate 3rd Class and transferred to the Destroyer Tender U.S.S. Altair on May 16th 1932. While still serving aboard the U.S.S. Altair, station in San Diego, CA Gunners Mate Shutt qualified for this Navy Expert Pistolshot at the San Diego Police Department Pistol Range on April 14th 1934.
GM2c Shutt then qualified for this Navy Expert Rifleman Medal while still aboard the U.S.S. Altair in 1937.
From 1937 -1940 GM1c served aboard the Destroyers U.S.S. Sampson, & U.S.S. Monaghan. In 1941 he was transferred to the “Liberty Fleet” Freighter U.S.S. Polaris. He was then promoted to Chief Gunners Mate in 1942 and transferred to the Battleship U.S.S. South Dakota where he would participate in the Battle of Santa Cruz and Second Battle of Guadalcanal.
CGM Shutt’s next assignment was aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Walke where he found himself off the coast of Normandy on D-Day June 6, 1944. The following month, CGM Shutt was commended by the commanding officer for a Meritorious Mast Award for outstanding performance of duty as leading gunners mate during the sustained amphibious operation against the enemy.
After the war, CGM Shutt served at District Staff Headquarters 12th Naval District for about a year, then serving another 7 months in Adak, Alaska before was Honorably Discharged on June 29th 1947. Shutt re-enlisted August 28th 1950 and served stateside for the next 2 years until he was discharged from the Navy on August 8th 1942.
